I don’t know about you but getting an honest used car deal from a dealership was a grueling and exhausting process for me. I spent hours doing my research on various makes and models as well as comparing prices on the internet. Afterwards I was off to countless dealerships to take a few test drives and start the negotiation process. After going back and forth with the salesperson and his manager I finally came to an agreement on the price for my used car purchase.
This is where many people make their biggest mistake when purchasing a used car. Most people believe that once you agree on the price that the tough part is over. If your financing your vehicle, which most of us do, then you need to make sure you stay above the game when you sit down in the finance office of the dealership. This is where the dealership can hit you hard with extras and that’s why you need to avoid being caught in the YES mode.
I had already said yes to buying the used vehicle. I would be lying if I said my adrenalin was not pumping when I sat down to discuss the financing terms of the deal. Any savvy salesperson will tell you that if you can get someone to say yes to a few questions then it makes it easier to get a commitment to buy something extra. I had found some insider information on this subject so I had a pretty good idea of what was about to transpire.
The finance manager was polite and very professional and while we went over the paperwork he would ask general questions that had “yes” answers to them. After saying yes and nodding to his questions he went for the up sell. “Naturally your going to want an extended warranty to help protect your investment.” I should have cut him off, but I let him finish his pitch then politely said “no thanks. “
A few minutes later he tried to sell the extended warranty again but this time he reduced the price. I again said thanks but no thanks to his offer. He tried a third time and this time he explained that if I purchased it and later changed my mind I could get a refund for it. I told him to forget about it because I didn’t believe in extended warranties.
