Buying Cars Used Or New? The Pros and Cons

Buying cars used can potentially save you a great deal of money. A new car depreciates in value as soon as you drive it away from the showroom to the tune of about 25 to 30% after three years. Is there any point to buying a new car? Why don’t I just buy a used car and avoid the initial loss?

  • Buying a new car gives you that “brand new buzz”.
  • You have a full warranty to protect against defects.
  • No accident history.
  • No dodgy mileage.
  • Possible free servicing for a period of time.

However there is no guarantee that the car will run perfectly. My wife has a car which is three years old and for the first two years it was in and out of the dealership like a yoyo. So what are the reasons for buying a used car?

  • You can save a great deal of money.
  • Any defects or running problems should have already been resolved under warranty.
  • Any recalls should have been sorted.
  • You can buy a used car that is fully loaded as the extras are generally not valued as highly in the used market

Reasons not to buy a used car.

  • Accident damage is sometimes hard to spot.
  • Wearing problems on engine parts and transmissions can be missed if you are not an expert.
  • Lack of warranty.
  • Is the mileage real?
  • Does the car require an expensive replacement part at a certain time in its lifespan. This maybe why someone is selling.

I have bought new and used cars and for me buying a used car makes more sense. You can get more for your money and done correctly you can find something in great shape.
